The Michigan Workers' Compensation fee schedule provides that a carrier may request a physician specialist to perform a consultation. These services are reimbursable at the maximum payment allowance as defined in the rules for CPT codes. Our specialist physicians will use CPT codes 99244 (billed at $269.22) or 99245 (billed at $329.55) depending on complexity, which makes them a very cost effective alternative to the Independent Medical Examination, a by report billable item. The only issue not addressed is causality, which on an accepted claim is not generally relevant. This Medical Disability Consult will include current medical status, ability to work with restrictions, appropriate present and future medical care, or simply disability, restrictions and medical care.
Consulting Physicians will offer this service in the specialties of physical medicine & rehabilitation, orthopedics and internal medicine. Excellent state-wide coverage is available for physical medicine & rehabilitation, including the Upper Peninsula, and the service will be expanded as the demand warrants.
